Whereas Chief Ronald Few has removed the fifth firefighter from ladder trucks No. 5, 10 and 12 in order to save money; and, Whereas, Ladder 12 serves the neighborhoods encompassed by this commission; and, Whereas, the lack of a fifth firefighter on the ladder trucks was one of the factors cited by an independent analyst as one of the causes of the deaths of Sgt. Carter and Firefighters Matthews and Lewis in fires over the last three years; Whereas, already this month, a fire in the 4500 block of Dexter St., NW, was responded to by two ladder trucks, Numbers 5 and 12, neither of which had the fifth firefighter, resulting in a fire being fought with two fewer people there than should have been; and, Whereas, it is the sense of the community and the commission that for the safety of all communities and firefighters, the fifth firefighter should be restored to all ladder trucks, Now, therefore, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3-E hereby SUPPORTS the return of the fifth firefighter to all ladder trucks in the city and urges the Mayor and the City Council to make sufficient funds available to do so. ANC 3-E approved this resolution by a vote of 4-0 at its monthly public meeting on December 14, 2000. Commissioners present were Jill Diskan, Chris McNamara, Steve Posniak, and Tad DiBiase. |
